The band’s all here: Dr. Dog photographed in Philadelphia by Chris Crisman.

The phenomenally popular rock band Dr. Dog, one of the area’s most successful musical exports, has a new album out — and, so we can’t be accused of burying the lead — it’s streaming right now at RollingStone.com.

The new record, B-Room, was recorded in the band’s Clifton Heights recording studio, also named B-Room. Its construction was, if not a labor of love, certainly laborious.

“We spent pretty much our whole recording budget at Home Depot,” the band’s Scott McMicken told the Inquirer in June. Talking to Rolling Stone, bandmate Toby Leaman said: “This was a straight-up construction project.”

The object of all their elbow-greased affections is a converted silversmith mill. Rolling Stone’s Ryan Reed writes:

The studio became a second home for the band – and understandably so. A 5,000-square-foot pseudo-mansion covered in large windows, the space itself features two bedrooms, two bathrooms, multiple storage rooms, a main “chill room” with kitchen and couches, a control room, tracking room and the titular B-room, where band members would work out ideas while others were busy recording (or hanging out) elsewhere.

Which is not to say it’s in perfect shape. The bandmates are still working on it:

“If you kinda just felt stale musically, somebody else could be inspired and could work,” Leaman adds. “And you wouldn’t just be sitting there pulling your hair out – you could actually go do some physical labor in the studio and still feel like you’re doing something. You don’t want to a do a guitar solo? Then sweep!”

It sounds like the construction project has done them some good musically too. “This literal hands-on approach kick-started a much-needed creative re-boot,” Reed writes. “B-Room offers a simpler, more organic approach to songcraft, a truer reflection of Dr. Dog’s strengths as a band playing together in a room.”
